Description
Forge Mill, a corn mill noted on an estate map of 1789 (1), was still in use in the late nineteenth century (2). The mill is now used as a barn and at the time of visiting was almost full of hay. The associated structures are used as storage outbuildings.
The mill itself is of coursed limestone and sandstone rubble with arched windows, under a pitched slate roof. All the machinery has been removed though much of the joinery remains. This includes roof trusses (pegged and bolted) and what appears to be the clutch mechanism for a wire machine. The upper floor beams are intact though the floor has gone. A small stone building on the immediate southeast may have been the barn though there appears to be a fireplace on the first floor. Adjacent to it is the cart shed. A small building shown on the O.S. 1st edition 25" (but not shown on the estate map), between Forge Mill Farmhouse and the mill itself, has now gone; it may have been a drying kiln. The mill was powered by an overshot wheel fed by a leat which is still visible. It starts from the river Loughor at a point some 400m to the northeast, at about SN 6638 1737.
