Description
Norman settlement mentioned in Domesday Book, 1086. Originally based around a wooden motte and bailey, a stone castle was built by 12th Century. The original village was an 'English' style settlement, with houses surrounding a central preaching cross, and with a four field system under strip cultivation. The town rapidly expanded after WWII, and now numbers over 10,000 inhabitants.
