Description
Statue in grounds of Gloddaeth Hall (NPRN 86379).

1. Over life sized statue of Hercules. Leaden cast on rectangular dressed sandstone pedestal, made by early 18th century sculptor john Van Nost. His initials are carved into the top of the plinth.
(S Fielding RCAHMW 11/05/2005)

2. Copy of the Farese Hercules, itself a copy of a Greek original. Hercules is massively naked. He rests from his labours, carrying his renowned club and the skin of the Nemean Lion. Considering the heroic nature of Hercules the statue may be rather under life size. Hercules stood in a glade where three paths cross in a shrubbery, wilderness or wood, south-east of the formal gardens. He was described as mutilated in 1837. He was removed to the lawn before the house in the 1990s.
