Description
Maerdy Collieries No.1 Pit was sunk in 1875 a short distance north of the remote Maerdy Farm near the head of Cwm Rhondda-fach; No.2 Pit was sunk a year later some 37m to the north of No.1. In 1885 an explosion killed 81 men and boys at the mine. Coal production ceasd in 1932 and the mine was closed although the site was retained for railway sidings in connection with Nos.3 and 4 Pits (nprn 80553) and the 1950s Maerdy Colliery (nprn 33505). The site has been cleared and is currently occupied by a factory.
