The 1st edition of the historic 25-inch O. S. maps, published in 1878, depicts Howe Mill as a working corn mill, but the 2nd edition (1899) depicts it as disused. Water was diverted from the Afon Ddawan through a mill race 300 metres long to the mill. The dwelling now on site, hidden behind a modern gatehouse, is probably the former mill house, an imposing structure with a front-facing pediment with an oculus window. What would have been the mill attached to the house on the west side, now appears to be part of the house.
