Description
Tremadog was created in the first decade of the nineteenth century on newly reclaimed land. It was intended as a post town on the route beteeen London and Dublin. The Royal Madoc Arms was the town's coaching inn and was completed by 1808. It is now a hotel.
The inn is a late Georgian structure facing onto Market Square beside the Market Hall.
The main building is a symmetrical three bay block, three storeys and attics, with a central doorway within a flat-roofed porch. The attic is lit by dormers. The walls are of coursed, dressed quarry stone and it has a slate gabled roof between end chimney stacks. The main building is flanked by two lower, two storey, two bay wings, of similar construction and with similar details. The eastern wing, adjoining the Town Hall, was the taproom. The western wing has a three bay side elevation and its roof is hipped away from the main block. The main building originally had an L-plan serice range at the rear.
Adjoining the north end of the west wing are two cottages converted from the eastern part of the stable block (NPRN 31369). The rest of this block has been demolished.
