Description
A foursquare Regency villa built in the early decades of the nineteenth century for William Madocks, founder of Tremadoc and Porthmadog. The house is set within extensive grounds and gardens (NPRN 86417), which were guarded by a lodge (NPRN 26479) on the main drive to the north. There are ancillary buildings north of the house. From the 1930s the house served first as a school and then as a nunnery. It was much altered in this period.
The villa is a two storey building with walls of whitened roughcast and a pyramidal slate roof climaxing in a central roughcast chimney stack. It is entered from the west. A closed veranda runs around three sides of the building. This is articulated by tuscan pillars and these are matched the pillars at the corners of the upper storey, each face of which has two sash windows. A modern extension has been built over an earlier bowed conservatory on the south side. On the north side is a mid nineteenth century service range, two storeys with attics under a half hipped slate roof.
Within, the veranda has vaulted plaster ceilings. The central entrance hall features elliptcal arches and there is a steep semi-circular newel stair.
