Description
A row of three mid nineteenth century three-storey houses. They are depicted on the 1st edition OS 1:500 Town Plan, but have recently been demolished to make way for a less satisfying developement. The Parade was established as a civic amenity by public subscription in 1782. Here the good burgers promenaded and bands played, through to the later nineteenth century.
This is a ten bay rendered building with a common slate gabled roof, divided into two three bay houses (Nos. 3 & 5) and a central four-bay house (No. 4). Each had a doorway in the right hand bay and two sash windows on the ground floor, all behind a iron railed fence set on a dwarf wall of large stone blocks. The first floor had similar sashes to those on the ground floor, whilst the upper storey windows had near square openings. The tenth bay, on the right hand side of No. 4, had a roundheaded entryway under regular fenestration in the upper storeys. The row canted slighly about this bay.
The houses were two rooms deep and No. 3 had a large full height rear range.
This was a refined and elegant row and its loss is the town's loss.
