Description
Plas Mawr, formerly known as Cwrt y Ceidrim, is a substantial C16th storeyed house with lateral chimney and great chamber. Sixteenth century architectural features include mural stairs, broach-stopped beams in the upper-end parlour, and roll-moulded beams. Ovolo-moulded detail distinguishes seventeenth century additions. The roof was renewed in the nineteenth century. Increasing dereliction of the house has revealed numerous fragments of moulded masonry reused in the walling. RCAHMW's record photographs show the eighteenth century buffet and panelling in the great chamber, now mostly removed. The associated farmbuildings west of the house have been demolished or greatly altered. A garden survives on the east side. Condition in 2002: derelict but awaiting restoration. The mid-nineteenth century Tithe Schedule lists a field known as Ynys y Capel, within which a small chapel (NPRN 418321) reputedly stood on the bank of the Afon Llwchwr (River Lougher). The site is located some 600m south-west of Plas-mawr. It is noted that around 1874 a stone inscribed with letters was brought from the site to Cwrt y Ceidrim House (now Plas-mawr) and used as a doorstop. The inscription had worn away by 1914.
