Description

No. 23 St Catherine Street is one of a mirrored cottage pair with the former No. 24 (NPRN 3009). They are thought to be late-eighteenth or early nineteenth century, and are depicted on the 1834 Town Map. The cottages were modified in the late nineteenth-early twentieth century and were extensively restored and otherwise modified after 1994. They may now be a single residence.
This was a one and a half storey single bay building, stone-rubble walled, under a common slate gabled roof with No. 24, with a shared low central chimney stack. Facing the street it had a doorway and a sash window on the ground floor and a gabled dormer above. The doorway led into a narrow hall and staircase, with a single ground floor room to the left. The upper floor had a staircase landing and a small room to the rear, both with windows, and a larger front room.
At the rear there was a single storey brick-walled(?) range in a small yard. These features are depicted on the 1st edition OS 1:500 Town Plan of 1888.
