Situated on the River Trannon, the name Trefeglwys derives from Tref 'township' and Eglwys 'church'. Historically, the community of Trefeglwys includes the townships of Bodaioch, Maestrefgomer, Esgeirieth and Dolgwden; it now encompasses the villages of Llawryglyn and Staylittle.
