Description
Market building of 1833, built on site of an earlier market building.
An open colonnaded hall that can be likened to an austere Doric temple. It is nine bays long and three bays wide. The hipped slate roof is supported by round columns with square piers at the angles, all of stone rubble. Central arched entries between square piers facing High Town and Market Street suggest restrained triumphal arches.
In the mid twentieth century the hall was converted as a store. A continuous wall was built within the arcade with windows in each bay. This was removed in 1984. The columns are now linked by railings.
