Sources suggest that the Moel-y-Don ferry came into being in the 16th century at the time of the re-location of Llanidan/Llanfair ferry to a crossing between Moel-y-Don and y Felinheli. During the eighteenth century, the Moel y Don boat is recorded as being able to carry fifteen men and ten horses at a time. Service on the ferry route continued until October 1935.
