The wreck of the CITY OF GLASGOW lies in 97m of water and is orientated 200 (bow)/ 020 (stern). The wreck is upright on the seabed, it is 137m in length and 16m wide.
The wreck was originally identified by the UKHO as the MESABA (NPRN 518443). Research by Dr Innes McCartney (2022: 170) for the Echoes from the Deep project, following a detailed survey by Bangor University in May 2019, identified the wreck as being dimensionally, positionally, and archivally consistent with the loss of the CITY OF GLASGOW. The record has been updated to reflect that new research.
Event and Historical Information:
The CITY OF GLASGOW was part of the combined convoys OE21 and OL32 when it was torpedoed by UB-118 on 1 September 1918. The torpedo hit the vessel amidships, breaking its back, and the ship took an hour to sink.
