Description

The wreck identified as the CLYWD (NPRN 272188) lies in 58m of water and is orientated 310 (bow)/130 (stern) degrees. The wreck was first located and examined by the UKHO in 1996 when it was noted as having a significant magnetic anomaly, and a surveyed length of 38m, and a width of 7m. This led it to be identified as the wreck of the CLWYD. In 2000 divers reported that the wreck was 70m in length, that the bows were damaged and that they considered it to be a Second World War casualty. Different diver reports in 2001 considered the wreck to be late 19th century in date. The telegraph, by Donkin and Co, of Newcastle, and a Walker's Patent Cherub Mk2 log were recovered and declared to the Receiver of Wreck.

The wreck was re-examined by the UKHO in 2022 and had a surveyed length of 39.7m, a width of 7m and a height of 6.2m. This corroborated the 1996 survey and demonstrated the overestimation of the vessels length in 2000. The wreck was also surveyed by Bangor University in May 2019, with subsequent analysis undertaken by Innes McCartney for the Echoes from the Deep Project. McCartney (2022) concluded that the identification of the wreck as the CLWYD was correct, based on the dimensions and position of the wreck.
