Description
A flat stone slab, lying on the ground surface and measuring c.1.2m long x 0.7m wide. It bears the inscriptions of several initials. On the eastern side of the stone face the letters GH are carved. At the southern end, an M (or possibly W) seems to have been carved. On the western side of the stone, CM is inscribed. These initials presumably refer to estates holding an interest in the mountain pastures. It is thought that the initials GH represent Gwynne-Holford, the family name of the owners of the Buckland Estate during the 19th and 20th centuries, which had possession of a large part of the common land here. This stone may be that indicated at this point on the 1st edition 1:10560 Ordnance Survey map of 1905; a small upright stone has been set at its northern edge, as if to draw attention to its location.
