Description
1. House of W.H. West, Sheriff, 1833, whose son built present house in Italian style.
RCAHMW, 01 January 1993.

2. A large Italianate-style house, consisting of a central range with east and west cross-wings (the west wing considerably extended to provide service rooms), which have tall campanili attached, and with a porte cochere at the north end of the east wing. Said to have been built circa 1881 for the Rev. W. West, the architects being Brown & Gill of Bath. West's father, William H. West, had laid out the gardens (nprn 86062) circa 1845 and lived in an earlier house to the north, which became a stable when the new house was built. It was sold in 1903 to Sir Shirley Salt, who added a porte cochere to the entrance. The house became a hotel circa 1936.
