Ty Mawr, the Great House (NPRN 306219), was built for Sam Hopkins, ironmaster of the Blaenavon works (NPRN 34134) in about 1800. It continued as a private or corporate residence until 1924/5, when it became a hospital (see NPRN 306222). It is now a nursing home.
The original house was a south-west facing three storey late Georgian mansion set in extensive grounds. These are depicted in some detail on the 1st edition OS County series (Monmouth. XII.9 1880). The house stood at the southern end of the grounds, with what appears to be a kichen or orchard garden to the rear. The main entrance was at the north end, where a gate and lodge stood at the bottom of Abergavenny Road, from where a carriage drive wound its way southwards to the house.
