The Seven Sisters name is said to derive from the seven sisters of Evan Evans Bevan, whose father sunk the first pit. The village developed rapidly following the start of commercial deep mining in 1872. There is a particularly interesting terrace of single-storey colliers' cottages on church Street, near the main road into the village from the south.
