Event and Historical Information:
The CALCIUM was a steel-hulled steamship built by G Brown & Sons at Greenock in 1918. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 613gt, 280nt; 180ft 4in length x 28ft 1in breadth x 10ft 8in depth; 1 deck (weatherdeck), 3 bulkheads, boatdeck 9ft, quarterdeck 52ft, forecastle 27ft; machinery aft, by McKie & Baxter, Glasgow. At time of loss, the vessel was owned by United Alkali Co Ltd (now ICI). Much of its service life had been spend carrying limestone from a quarry at Llandulas to the Burn Naze Works at Fleetwood. On 29 December 1940, the CALCIUM was in company with its sister ship SODIUM on passage from Fleetwood to Llandulas off the Great Orme. At 9.15pm, the vessel struck a mine. The CALCUIM's fireman was killed in the boileroom, but the remainder of the crew transferred to the SODIUM which turned back to help. The SODIUM attempted to tow the vessel, but as the CALCIUM filled could make no headway and the tow was abandoned. The CALCIUM took on a list to port and eventually sank at around 8.30am on the 30 December 1940.
