Description
Archaeological remains associated with the loss of this vessel are not confirmed as present at this location, but may be in the vicinity.

Event and Historical Information:
Although described as a flat, with Ipswich given as the port of registry, the MARY may have been a Thames coasting barge. At time of loss on 9 January 1852, the vessel was carrying a cargo of hard woods (oak) under the command of master Catchpole. The MARY had anchored in Bangor Bay to ride out a northerly force 10 gale on 9 January 1852. A sudden shift of wind washed away the vessel's rudder and sternpost. The MARY began to take on water. The anchor cables were slipped and the run vessel ashore amongst the rocks to save the lives of the crew.
