Event and Historical Information:
The CURLEW was a wooden smack built in 1857 and registered at Beaumaris. At time of loss, the vessel was owned by T Evans of Caernarfon. It was carrying a cargo of gravel from Conwy to Liverpool under the command of master W Evans, when it developed a leak during an east southeasterly gale on 18 August 1898. The smack subsequently sank 8 miles north-northeast of the Great Orme.
