Description

The wreck site of the ARDRI has been identified during research by Dr Innes McCartney (2022: 212) for the Echoes from the Deep project. McCartney concluded that the ARDRI is positionally, dimensionally, and archivally consistent with UKHO 10014 (NPRN 516122). The record has been updated to reflect that research.

Event and Historical Information:
The ARDRI was a screw steamer built in 1892 by J Shearer & Sons, Glasgow (Yard No. 8, Official No. 99819). Technical and configuration specifications are given as 478gt, 190nt; 165ft 2in length x 26ft 1in x 10ft 8in; screw propulsion powered by a single steam boiler linked to a compound engine producing 66hp. The vessel had one change of name during its service life - ex CORAL. It was owned at the time of loss by W Thomas & Sons, Beaumaris.

On 22 January 1836, the ARDRI was on passage from London to Glasgow with a cargo of bagged cement when it foundered off Bardsey Island. The crew were rescued and landed in Cardiff.
