Event and Historical Information:
The POMONA was a sailing brig built in 1847. At time of loss, owner and master of the vessel was H Byrne, Dundalk, Co Louth. The brig stranded near Borthwen during a force 9 north northwesterly gale on 20 February 1877. The Porthdinllaen Life Saving Rocket Apparatus team were called to the scene of the wreck, but failed to get a line onboard using their rockets. Eventually a coastguard swan out to the wreck with a line tied around his waist to facilitate the setting up of a breeches buoy. The crew were all saved.
