Description
This record comprises a documentary reference to a shipping casualty which has been assigned to the maritime named location CAERNARFON BAY pending more information which may allow a more precise location for the loss to be assigned.

Event and Historical Information:
The STRATHMORE was a 198ton brig built at Port Glasgow in 1826. The ship's entry in Lloyd's Register suggests that the vessel had a new keel in 1837 when damaged was repaired. It was also sheathed in felt and copper in 1840. It was owned by the master, P Gavin, and others and was registered at Leith. The vessel was intended for use in the Baltic trade, according to its insurance declaration. However, the brig was returning from Bahia to Liverpool when it was caught in a gale in Caernarfon Bay. The ship was blown ashore on 31 March 1841 and was extensively damaged, so much so that the tide was reported as flowing through the ship and over the hold beams. The crew were saved and part of the cargo was landed.
