Event and Historical Information:
The FLORIST was a wooden brigantine built by Huddart, Whitehaven, in 1869. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 135gt, 126nt; 83ft 3in length x 20ft 9in breadth x 11ft 8in depth; hull sheathed in felt and yellow metal (copper). At time of loss, the vessel was owned by W R Kelly of Whitehaven and registered at that port. The FLORIST was carrying a cargo of coal from Cardiff to Belfast on 16 November 1882 under the command of master J James. The brigantine was caught in a northerly force 8 gale and foundered 4 miles southwest of the Cardigan Bay lightship.
