Event and Historical Information:
The NEPTUNE was a wooden brigantine built at Bilbao, Spain, in 1846. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 79.32 gt; 68.2ft length, 19.5ft main breadth, 10ft depth in hold; 1 deck, 2 masts, brigantine rigged, square stern, build carvel, scroll head, framework wood; official number 23230. The NEPTUNE was transferred from Milford to the port of Carnarvon shipping register in 1858 (3 in 1858) by John Roberts of Carnarvon, master mariner. In July 1868, John Roberts sold 16 shares to Henry Ferguson and John Ferguson of South Wharf Road, Paddington, slate merchants and carpenters. The Ferguson partnership was adjudged bankrupt in May 1871 and the shares were sold back to John Roberts in June 1871. At time of loss, the brigantine was owned by John Williams Senior of Garth, Porthmadoc. The NEPTUNE was carrying roofing slates from Aberdyfi to Littlehampton under the command of master O Hughes when it was caught in a west-northwesterly force 10 and blown ashore near Newton Noyes Pier. The vessel's shipping register entry was closed in February 1901 after a letter was received from John Williams confirming that ' the NEPTUNE of Caernarfon?. was totally wrecked at Milford Haven on 28 December 1900'.
