Description
Archaeological remains associated with the loss of this vessel are not confirmed as present at this location, but may possibly be in the vicinity.

Event and Historical Information:
The CATHERINE was a wooden schooner belonging to the port of Wexford. At time of loss on 18 May 1873, the vessel was under the command of Patrick French an carrying a cargo of culm from Llanelli to Wexford. The Board of Trade Inquiry held at Wexford into the loss heard that the schooner had left Llanelli at 10am on the 18 may and a 4pm whilst on the northwest track, St Ann's Head, Linney Head and the Crow Rock beacon had all been in sight. The schooner being too close to land, the master had ordered a course 1.5 points of the compass to clear Crow Rock. When the Crow Rock Beacon was still about one mile distant, the CATHERINE struck rocks and commenced to make water. The master ordered her to be hove to, and the boats lowered, and three-quarters of an hour after the stranding the crew were picked up by the schooner MERSEY, and landed at Milford Haven. Fifteen minutes after abandoning the CATHERINE, the schooner was seen to founder. The Inquiry were of the opinion the vessel was lost through the culpable neglect of the Master on sailing too close to well known dangers, and in failing to avail himself of the marks afforded by beacons. He was also guilty of making no effort by pumping or beaching, to save the property entrusted to his charge. Since the Master held no certificate, the Court were unable to punish him, other than to forbid him to command a coaster for six months.
