Description

The wreck identified by the UKHO as the CLYDESDALE lies in 62m of water and is orientated 320/140 degrees. The wreck is described as degraded, and the surveyed remains are 6.5m in length. Scour, 15m by 13m and 6m deep, extends towards 350 degrees.

The wreck was not found during survey in 1981, but was located and examined in July 2020.

Event and Historical Information:
The CLYDESDALE was a steel-hulled, well-deck steamship built by Blackwood & Gordon at Port Glasgow in 1881. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 972gt 608nt; 214ft 4in length x 31ft 2in breadth x 13ft 6in depth. At time of loss on 28 March 1890, the vessel was owned by R Mackill of Glasgow and under the command of J Sim. The ship was carrying coal from Newport to Dublin when it foundered 4 miles to the north of North Bishop.
