Description

This record consists of a documentary reference to a shipping casualty which has been assigned to the maritime named location HAT AND BARRELS pending more information which may allow a more precise location for the loss to be assigned.

Event and Historical Information:
The MOGADORE was an iron-hulled steamship built by Iliff, Mounsey & Co at Sunderland in 1872. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 956gt, 612nt; 209ft 2in length x 29ft 1in breadth x 16ft 7in depth. The ship had one change of name during its service life - ex SILBURY. At time of loss 25 July 1895, the vessel was owned by Leech, Harrison, Forwood, of Liverpool and under the command of R Hodge. The MOGADORE was carrying coal from Glasgow to Bayonne when it ran onto the Hat and Barrels reef.
