Description
This record consists of a documentary reference to a shipping casualty which has been assigned to the maritime named location OFF THE SMALLS pending more information which may allow a more precise location for the loss to be assigned.

Event and Historical Information:
The RESTITUTION was a steel-hulled steamship built by Wigham Richardson & Co, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in 1886. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 3290gt, 2171nt; 340ft length x 43ft 4in breadth x 23ft 4in depth; 1 deck, 6 bulkheads, passenger deck 34ft, boat deck 80ft, forecastle 40ft; screw propulsion powered by two steam boilers linked topa triple expansion engine producing 370hp; offifical number 91282. At time of loss on 27 October 1916, the vessel was owned by Southern Whaling & Sealing Co Ltd and registered at North Shields. The RESTITUTION was carrying coal from Liverpool to South Georgia when it was lost off the Smalls.
