Event and Historical Information:
The PROGRESS was a sailing ketch built at Kingsbridge in 1884 (Official No. 86466). Technical and configuration specifications are given as 80ft 2in long x 19ft 2in breadth x 9ft 2in depth; 85gt, 58nt. In 1919 it was fitted with an auxiliary engine producing 46hp.
In 1954 the PROGRESS was carrying coal to the Canary Islands but was taken in tow and berthed in Milford Haven for repairs, having developed a leak as well as engine trouble. It left the Haven in July, but again the engine broke down and it was towed back towards the Haven, going ashore just past the quay at Angle in June 1954. It was abandoned and became a total wreck. Historic photos of Angle Harbour from the period show the PROGRESS beached on the southern side of the harbour, in the area known as Hall Walk. It is reported to have been set on fire and largely destroyed in the mid-1960s.
