Event and Historical Information:
The SAINT HELEN was a wooden brigantine built by Thomas Williams at Caernarfon in 1844. Technical and configuration specifications is given as 133.65gt; 79.2ft length x 23.7ft breadth x 11.95ft depth in hold; 1 deck, 2 masts; rigging brigantine squares; stern square; build carvel; head woman's bust; framework wood; official number 14250. For part of its service life, it was owned by the harbour master at Caernarvon, Richard Owen, and by the slate merhcants, James and William Henderson of Aberdeen, At time of loss on 1 March 1883, the vessel was owned by R Ellis of Barmouth and registered at Caernarfon (14 in 1874, formerly 23 in 1852). It was carrying a cargo of roofing slate from Porthmadog to Hamburg when it was caught in heavy weather (east-northeasterly force 6) off the Pembrokeshire coast. The SAINT HELEN subsequently foundered 8 miles northeast of the South Bishop Light.
