Description
Archaeological remains associated with the loss of this vessel are not confirmed as present at this location, but may be in the vicinity.

Event and Historical Information:
This UNKNOWN wooden sailing vessel was registered in Spain. At time of loss, in 1696, the vessel was sailing from an unknown port to an unknown destination, when it was lost in Rhossili Bay. Larn and Larn shipwreck database description states: One of three supposed 'treasure wrecks' on this coast, which has a long history in local legends. It is said to have been a Spanish galleon which in one reference source is placed mid way between Diles Lake and the Old Parsonage in Rhossili Bay. A number of Spanish pieces of eight (silver eight reales) are said to have been found, and a number of locals in the area are said to hold some coins. Two iron cannon were also supposed to have been recovered in 1833 which are now mounted on granite plinths in a private garden at Hillend. Exceptionally low spring tides in 1807 and 1833, were said to have revealed many silver coins in the mud and silt foreshore. In 1807 12lbs (5.4kg) of coins were found, dating from 1625 to 1639, and in 1833 more coins, an iron cannon and a fragment of an astrolabe were recovered.
