Event and Historical Information:
The OSWALDIAN was built as a steam trawler for the Loyal Steam Fishing Co Ltd, Grimsby, by Cook, Welton & Gemmell Ltd, Beverley. The trawler (fishing number FY1651), was requistioned into the Royal Navy during the first World War and was converted to a minesweeper and armed with a 1 x 12pdr gun. The trawler returned to fishing in 1919 and was sold on 22 May 1940 to Sir Alec Black, Grimsby. In the same month, the OSWALDIAN was hired again by the navy and converted into a minesweeper/armed patrol vessel, and was based at Milford Haven. The trawler detonated a mine off the Breaksea light and sank 4 August 1940. The crew of seven managed to land at Barry. The position given for the loss was 1 mile southeast of the Breaksea lightvessel. The wreck was dispresed to a height of 3-4ft in August 1949, and in November of the same year was noted to have a caused a scour up to 4ft deep.
