Description
This record consists of a documentary reference to a shipping casualty which has been assigned to the maritime named location WEST SCAR BANK pending more information which may allow a more precise location for the loss to be assigned.

Event and Historical Information:
The WABASH was a wooden brig built in 1857 at Walton, Nova Scotia. At that time, technical and configuration specifications were given as 185gt, 169nt; 104ft length x 24ft breadh x 12ft depth. The brig's owner was Frederick Curry of Newport, mariner. The WABASH's registry was transferred to Liverpool in 1861. At time of loss in March 1869, the vessel was carrying a cargo of cast iron ingots/pigs from Maryport to Briton Ferry. It stranded and was subsequently lost with all crewmembers on the West Scar Sands during a northeasterly force 6 gale.
Note: the Wabash is the largest northern tributary of the river Ohio and flows through Indiana and Illinois, USA.
