Description
Archaeological remains associated with the loss of this vessel are not confirmed as present at this location, but may be in the vicinity.

Event and Historical Information:
The JAMES AND MARY was a wooden trow built in 1856 and registered at Bristol. At time of loss on 30 July 1873, the trow was carrying 90tons (or 86tons, sources differ) of elm timber from Bristol to Milford Haven. At the court of inquiry into the loss held at Bristol, the Justices heard that the trow had been in a leaky state for some time and that the master Thomas Guy had spoken to the owner twice about getting the vessel repaired or re-caulked. The trow has left Bristol at 4pm on 29 July 1873 with a crew of four onbaord. The trow had anchored off Flat Holmes waiting for tide to change to continue its voyage. At 3pm on the 30 July, when the trow was within 2 miles of Scarweather Sands, the JAMES AND MARY was caught in a squal during which it began to leak badly. Unable to weather Scarweather Sands, the trow bore up for Cardiff. However, at 5pm the trow foundered. The crew abandoned ship into their own boat. The Justices found that the loss of the vessel was as a result of the wilful act or default of the owner.
