Event and Historical Information:
The WATER LILY was a wooden sailing ketch built by Benjamin Blamey, Falmouth, in 1863. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 62nt; 67ft 7in length x 19ft 2in breadth x 9ft 1in depth; official number 45226. At time of loss on 1 November 1887, the vessel was owned by W Bunt of Penrhyn, Cornwall and was registered at Falmouth. The WATER LILY was carrying a cargo of coal from Newport to Helford under the command of master S Bate when it was caught in a southerly force 11 gale and stranded within the Cardiff Drain.
