Description
This record consists of a documentary reference to a shipping casualty which has been assigned to the maritime named location CARDIFF GROUNDS pending more information which may allow a more precise location for the loss to be assigned.

Event and Historical Information:
The LILY was a wooden schooner built by Joh Gough, Bridgwater in 1879. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 86gt, 71nt; 79ft 5in length x 21ft 5in breadth x 8ft 3in depth; official number 72459. At time of loss, the vessel was owned by J Tyrell, Arklow, and was under the command of master F Gregory. The LILY was carrying a cargo of stone from Arklow to Cardiff when it encountered a westerly gale force 6 and stranded on Cardiff Sands.
