Event and Histotical Information:
The SOLOR was a steel-hulled tanker built by Eriksbergs M.V. Akt, Gothenburg, in 1938. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 8262gt 4593nt; 469ft length x 61ft breadth x 34ft 5in depth; 1 deck, 4 bulkheads; screw propulsion powerd by an oile engine producing 644hp; machinery aft. At time of loss, the vessel was owned by S. Ugelstads Rederi A/S, Oslo, and was carrying 7,500 tons of crude oil and 37 crates of wooden gliders. The tanker convoy had left New York and had joined Convoy HS332 to cross the Atlantic to the Clyde. The ship was torpedoed by the German submarine U-956 under the command of master Mohs on 27 January 1945. Four of the 44 crewmen lost their lives. The ship remained at the centre of a hunt by the 21st Escort Group, until tugs took it in tow to Milford Haven. Off St Ann's Head, the tanker was discovered to be holed in the engine room and liable to sink without warning. The rescue tug STORM KING beached the vessel in Oxwich Bay on 29 January 1945 at 51 32.98N, 04 08.75W. The cargo was discharged after beaching. On 15 March 1945, it was accepted that the vessel was a total loss. The forward two-thirds of the vessel was refloated and taken to Briton Ferry for scrapping. The aft section remained at Oxwich until July 1952, when the decision to scrap was made. However, no further salvage operations were undertaken.
