The wreck of the STALHEIM lies in a general depth of 6m and is orientated 125/305 degrees. The wreck has a surveyed length of 81.3m, a width of 19.8m, and a height of 3.4m. The most recent survey of the site in 2018 reported a debris field on the NW side of the wreck and that its general state is degraded.
Event and Historical Information:
The STALHEIM was a steel-hulled steamship of Norweigian registry. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 1298gt; 251ft length x 42ft breadth x 14ft depth; screw propulsion powered by two steam boilers linked to a triple expansion engine.
At the time of loss on 31 July 1940, the vessel was carrying 1,876 tons of anthracite from Port Talbot and Barry to St Johns, Newfoundland. The vessel detonated a German-laid aerial magnetic mine, which killed five of her crew.
