Event and Historical Information:
The ELLA VAIL was a 198nt wooden brigantine built in 1863 and registered at Liverpool, Nova Scotia. At time of loss, the vessel was owned by M Fleming, Youghal, Co Cork and under the command of J Prendergast. The brigantine was carrying a cargo of coal from Cardiff to Youghal on 15 September 1878 when it was caught in a southwesterly force 10 gale and took shelter in Caldey Roads. The ELLA VAIL was subsequently in collision with the Dublin registered schooner MINERVA (see NPRN 274379) which also sank
