Description

An unidentified wreck (UKHO 7346) lies in 52m of water and is orientated 225 (bow)/045 )stern) degrees. The wreck was first located and examined by the UKHO in 1977, with a further survey in 2013 when it was described as having a strong magnetic anomaly. It was subject to a detailed survey by Bangor University in August 2020. when it had a surveyed length of 46m and a width of 6.2m. A further piece of wreckage was identified 75m to the northeast, that was 23m in length. The original overall vessel length may therefore have been around 70m.

The wreck was originally identified as the HMS WESTPHALIA, torpedoed and sunk by U97 on 11 February 1918. Research associated with the Bangor University survey was undertaken by Dr Innes McCartney (2022) for the Echoes from the Deep project, this demonstrated that it was impossible for UKHO 7346 to be the remains of the WESTPHALIA, which had a recorded sinking position c.50 miles away off the Irish coast.

The wreck is therefore considered to be unidentified, and possibly the remains of a sailing ship or motor vessel (McCartney, 2022).
