Description
A rectilinear enclosure, measuring 21.4m east -west by 10.2m. It is divided into three cells, the largest being the central one which measures 8.3m by 4.7m internally. Smaller cells exist at either end. The cell at the southwestern end has a higher floor level than the rest of the structure and could be interpreted as a former dwelling component of the complex, similar to the neighbouring site, NPRN 285539. At the northeastern end, a small cell, 2.3m by 5.3m is divided from the main cell by the stone footing of an internal wall. A striking feature of this site is the substantial earth banks that form the lateral walls of the structure, which are revetted internally with well constructed drystone walling. The southeastern side is approximately 3m wide and 1.5m high, with an entrance close to the centre. Interpretation of this site is difficult; it may be a medieval or early post medieval longhouse, but appears to have been used as a sheep fold during the 19th century, based on Ordnance Survey map evidence.
