Description
An intriguing box-framed house, probably an early storeyed house but possibly the wing of a lost major house. There are two principal phases:
1. C16th storeyed, box-framed range. Tall box-framed trusses define a storeyed range of four bays. The original plan is not certain but the baying suggests a passage between hall and parlour. The hall is of two bays, with a lateral fireplace having a prominent diagonally-set chimney (cf. Branas-uchaf). An outer parlour is suggested by the corbels originally supporting large flat joists in the gable end. The corbels seem to have been set over a large gable-end fireplace which has been largely removed. First floor chambers follow the baying of the ground floor with the principal chamber of two bays over the hall having an open central truss and lateral fireplace. The open truss has raking struts and a high collar. The first-floor lateral fireplace appears to have been modified or is a late insertion. There is an ovolo-moulded mullioned window in the gable end, but this may be a C17th modification.2. In the C19th the passage and parlour end of the range was extended on the [ ] side giving an L-plan range. It was then, presumably, that the principal doorway into the house from the passage was lost. The outer bays were rebeamed and the original flat joists cut off flush with the corbels. A new stair was constructed in the extended passage bay. The timber walls were replaced in stone at the ground floor but elements of timber framing remain on the first floor.
