The square earthwork enclosure which lies some 770m almost due east of Strata Florida Abbey has been recorded from aerial photography for many years but has not merited much comment. New Royal Commission winter aerial reconnaissance in 2007 and 2012 has shown the enclosure to be square in shape with markedly rounded corners, and with central gateway gaps in at least two of its sides. The enclosure measures some 33m square and is sited in a semi-defensive position at the leading eastern edge of a ridge of high ground at 290m above O.D. In these respects it is convincing as a possible Roman fortlet, but this hypothesis requires further work on the ground to test it.
