Description
No. 24 St Catherine Street is one of a mirrored cottage pair with No. 23 (NPRN 17779). They are thought to be late-eighteenth or early nineteenth century, and are depicted on the 1834 Town Map. The cottages were modified in the late nineteenth-early twentieth century and No. 24 had been refitted as a shop by the late twentieth century. They were extensively restored and otherwise modified after 1994 and may now be a single residence.
This was a one and a half storey building, stone-rubble walled under a common slate gabled roof with a shared low central chimney stack. Facing the street it had an inserted shopfront including doorway on the ground floor and an eaves-breaking semi-dormer window with a catslide roof above. The refitting as a shop is thought to have involved the re-siting of the staircase from an original end gable position.
At the rear was a single storey brick-walled(?) range in a small yard. These features are depicted on the 1st edition OS 1:500 Town Plan of 1888.
