The works railways may have been built to connect with a future line linking the Pentre and Mynydd Newydd collieries to the Great Western Railway: they certainly existed when it was first mapped in 1888. The line into the works probably continued in use until 1966 (S. Hughes, 'Copperopolis', p. 308).
