Description
The base, shaft and lower part of the cross of a churchyard cross set next to the porch of St Eilian's church (NPRN 32283).
The octagonal shaft is some 2.0m high and is surmounted by a stone collar topped by a narrower shaft thought to be the lower part of the original cross. The main shaft is set in a much weathered square base which rests on a three step drystone base roughly 3.0m across.
It is thought likely that the cross is contemporary with the church's fifteenth century nave and chancel.
Churchyard crosses such as this are though to have been involved in Palm Sunday processions when they were decorated with greenary and otherwise worshipped.
