Description
This 'U' shape group of 3 separate C18th farm buildings has been linked together in the C19th to form a continuous range with doorways and window openings having flat stone-arches. They consist of a former detached 6-bay, 3-door, lofted cow-house facing east, with flanking 6-bay, 3-door, lofted stable-range to south and a 6-bay corn barn to north.

At each end of the cow-house additional units with later roof-trusses link the building together and a lean-to has been added to the west side, housing a water-powered turbine. Leather belts and drive-shafts provided power for corn milling in the food-store, threshing in the barn and to a rotary saw in the lean-to.

The earlier buildings have differing types of raised scarfed-cruck lap-jointed roof-trusses. The cow-house has the normal scafed-cruck with 3 soffit pegs, formerly with loft floor tie-beam (see drawing), while the barn has the side jointed and side pegged type (see drawing), both with a lap collar. The stable has a similar lap-jointed, side-pegged post and truss with the post mortised to the former loft floor-beam (see drawing) and lap-collar. All trusses have 2 side-purlins and a diagonal-set ridge. There are chisel carpenter's assembly marks visible on some trusses.

The stable loft-floor has had its floor beams cut back and replaced by a later softwood joist floor, similar to the C19th food-store floor. The stable has blocked doorways to south wall and a straight-joint at first-floor to north wall indicating changed usage.
The cow-house has had its north end wall removed and its rear wall when adjoining C19th structures were added.
The barn has opposed doorways to a central threshing-bay with original opening visible to north wall, part blocked. It has slit ventilation openings to all walls with single gable slit openings.

An unusual group of well built C18th farm buildings set near to the C17th house, unfortunately due for demolition.

Visited, due to approval for LBC demolition, G A Ward & I N Wright, 21/02/2002.

Later 18th century, probably contemporary with the rebuilding of the house for Edward Vaughn, and remodelled in the mid 19th century.
